Separating the seeds from the chaff, California Fuchsia

This is the process of screening the seeds from the chaff of Epilobium canum, California Fuchsia. The seed pods are harvested by pulling them directly off the plant by hand when they start to dry out and open on their own. The seeds are attached to fine white hairs that allow them to float and spread by wind. I separate the seeds from the chaff before storing the seeds or selling them on Etsy. I made the screen by hand using wood scraps and common stainless steel window screen material (metal mesh fabric) that is available in most hardware stores. It has a mesh size of roughly 1/15 of an inch, 1.7 mm. My Etsy store is SoCalNativeGarden
