We've explored this in more detail in another video (   • Cycling in Japan FAQ: What is the bes...  ) but generally, the best weather for cycling in Honshu, Shikoku & Kyushu is pretty tied between Spring and Autumn. If you are cycling in Hokkaido then the window for cycling is smaller and mostly limited to the Summer months. What is the best cycling route when Cycling in Japan? The best Cycling Route in Japan deserves a full video (Coming soon), but the Shimanami Kaido is arguably the most popular route in Japan. However, we feel it's better served as a gateway to cycling around Shikoku. Plenty of other routes, like the Wakayama 800, Lake Biwa and the Keinawa Cycle Road should not be overlooked. What are the laws regarding Cycling in Japan? There is a big disconnect between the laws of the road and the actual reality of cycling in Japan. Can I take a bike on the train in Japan? In short, you'll need to cover the bike if you take a bike on the train in Japan. Should I book accommodation in advance when Cycling in Japan? It's probably better to book ahead. However, with the exception of a few national holidays and local festivals then you can probably book on the fly for most of the year. You will definitely need to book during Golden week (late April to early May), Obon (in August) and over the New Years' holiday. How to ship a bike across Japan? We'll be exploring this topic in more detail very soon but there are 3 main nationwide courier services that provide oversized luggage services. Sagawa If you have a box then Sagawa is the cheapest option. Check out their price list from Kansai below. To budget, bike boxes are usually around the 200 size. https://www.sagawa-exp.co.jp/english/... Seino (Japanese) Seino has a number of cycle-related delivery services. There are some geographical boundaries with regards to where they will deliver to and collect from, so please check their website for more details. http://www.cycle-seino.jp/ Yamato Kuroneko Kuroneko does offer Bicycle Delivery services but they raised their prices for this service, so we find Sagawa a more feasible option. Other smaller companies specializing in Bike Delivery services have come and gone in recent years, so it might be worth checking what is current.
