Cidofovir is an antiviral medication primarily used to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) retinitis in patients with AIDS. It works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, thereby preventing the replication of viral DNA. Administered intravenously, cidofovir is often used in patients who are intolerant or resistant to other antiviral drugs. Due to its potential nephrotoxicity (kidney damage), it is always given with probenecid and adequate hydration to reduce the risk. Besides CMV, cidofovir has shown activity against other DNA viruses like adenovirus, papillomavirus, and herpesvirus, although these uses are considered off-label. Cidofovir is not a cure but helps manage infections by slowing viral replication.
