Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Khmer, also known as Cambodian, is the official language of Cambodia and is spoken by over 16 million people, including both native speakers and minority communities in neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Thailand. It belongs to the Austroasiatic language family, specifically the Mon-Khmer branch, and is one of the oldest languages in the region with a written tradition dating back to the 7th century CE. Khmer is a non-tonal language with a rich system of vowels and consonants and is written in the Khmer script, an abugida derived from the ancient Brahmi script of India. Heavily influenced by Sanskrit and Pali, Khmer has absorbed numerous terms related to religion, governance, and culture through its historical connection to Hinduism and Buddhism. Today, Khmer serves as a unifying symbol of Cambodian identity and heritage. Pali is an ancient Middle Indo-Aryan language that holds a significant place as the liturgical and scholarly language of Theravāda Buddhism. While no longer a spoken vernacular, Pali is preserved in the sacred texts of the Tipiṭaka (Pali Canon), which form the foundation of Buddhist teachings. Originating in the Indian subcontinent around the 5th to 3rd century BCE, Pali is closely related to Sanskrit but is simpler in structure and pronunciation. It spread across South and Southeast Asia with the expansion of Buddhism and continues to be studied and chanted in Buddhist communities worldwide. As a linguistic bridge to ancient Buddhist texts, Pali remains vital in religious practice and academic study. Pali has significantly influenced the Khmer language, primarily through its role in Theravāda Buddhism, the dominant religion in Cambodia. This influence is evident in religious, literary, and formal vocabulary, with many Khmer terms related to spirituality, ethics, and governance derived from Pali. The Khmer script, which is used to write both the Khmer language and Pali texts, reflects this connection, as it evolved from Indian scripts used to transcribe Pali and Sanskrit. This enduring influence underscores the deep integration of Buddhist culture and teachings into Khmer society and language.
