Aneurysms are more common than you might think. “It is said that about 2% of the population will have a brain aneurysm.” Those with family history, hypertension, smokers or drug abusers have a higher risk of developing them. “An aneurysm is a small out pouching or balloon like structures that form in these weak spots where brain blood vessels split into other smaller blood vessels,” said Lee Health Neurosurgeon Dr. Rimal Dossani. There are two kinds of aneurysms, those that have and haven’t caused bleeding in the brain. With a brain bleed, “It causes the worst headache of life” said Dr. Dossani. You need to be seen by a doctor immediately. Either call 911 or come to the emergency department. Many unruptured aneurysms don’t show symptoms. They’re found through routine medical care when you get things like an MRI. If it’s small, they’ll just monitor it. If it’s larger, doctors will consider doing an endovascular aneurysm repair. “It’s minimally invasive, and we go in through a small artery in the wrist or the groin and put catheters and small wires into the aneurysms and block it from the inside.” If that’s not possible, doctors can do a brain surgery called a craniotomy. “To go in from the outside into the skull, find the aneurysm, and put a permanent metal clip,” said Dr. Dossani.
