INTRODUCTION OF THE MARRIAGE BILL 2024 BY TORORO WOMAN MP SARAH OPENDI

The Woman MP for Tororo District Sarah opendi has secured leave of Parliament to introduce the marriage Bill 2024. The Bills seeks to repeal and consolidate the legal framework governing marriage in Uganda. The proposed legislation provides for the recognized marriages in Uganda, general conditions to be applied in marriages including the constitutional age of marriage, separation and dissolution of marriage among others. The recognized marriages according to the bill include, Bahai Marriage, Christian marriage, Civil Marriage, Hindu Marriage, Customary Marriage and Islamic Marriage. The marriages shall be considered to have the same legal status. Sarah Opendi asserts in the bill that the spouses shall be entitled to equal access to matrimonial property. The speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among referred the bill to a joint Committees of Parliament of Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and the committee on Gender, Labour and Social Development.
