In this chilling true crime account, an escaped criminal's desperate actions lead to a sinister home invasion, resulting in multiple brutal murders on the cold and isolated Peak District moors in 1977. What drove Billy Hughes to commit such diabolical murders? Was it sheer desperation, a ruthless instinct for survival, or something far more sinister lurking beneath the surface? In the press it was also known as "The Year of the Knife". #truecrimepodcast #truecrimestory #historicalcrime Other points worth mentioning: In 1982 a movie was to be made entitled the Pottery Cottage Murders but the project was scrapped due to public outcry. On the prospect of this film being made Gillian said “I’ve had so many sleepless nights worrying that I might have to relive the ordeal. Now that the threat is lifted I can live in peace once again” Gillian Moran remarried and had a daughter in 1979. They named her Jayne Sarah in memory of Sarah. The Red Lion Public House which was close to where Hughes crashed his car after stabbing prison warders Sprintall and Simmonds, is now called the Peak Edge Hotel. Hughes went with Richard & Gillian Moran one evening to Brett Plastics where Hughes stole £210 (that's around £1200 in 2023) from the company safe. Hughes sat in back seat while the Morans sat up front. He threatened to stab them if they didn't do what he asked. His fingerprints were later found on the company safe confirming this.
