As Ambassador, Emanuel helped deepen the U.S. - Japan alliance, including support for Japan's increased defense spending and expanded military cooperation. He promoted Japan's leadership in Indo-Pacific key security initiatives and participated in the historic trilateral summit at Camp David that reaffirmed that cooperation between the United States, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Emanuel has devoted his career to public service: as Mayor of Chicago, as Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama, as a United States Congressman serving Illinois’s 5th Congressional District, and as a key member of President Bill Clinton’s administration.
