Big Waves in El Cotillo, Fuerteventura

Big Waves in El Cotillo are not that unusual in winter. After all, there is nothing between north America and the west coast of Fuerteventura for 3500 miles. They are spectacular at times and attract quite a crowd to watch the big ocean waves crash onto the rocks and beaches around El Cotillo. Unfortunately, the waves are so large some times that they wash most of the sand off of the Surfer's Beach (Piedra Playa) which in many places is 3 metres deep. It then takes 6 months or so to repair itself. Nature is an amazing thing. Even though there are such huge waves, the lagoon beaches are still calm as they are protected by the rocky reefs just offshore.
