Many people assume that if a horse injures its leg, the animal can not recover, but leg surgery is now a routine maintenance procedure to keep horses healthy. And in the case of thoroughbreds, it can even return a horse to top form as a champion, such as the cases of 2011 Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom and 2011 American Horse of the Year, Havre de Grace. In this episode, the surgeon who operated on both Animal Kingdom and Havre de Grace, Dr. Larry Bramlage, examines a racehorse suffering from lameness, and finds bone fragments in a joint. He admits the horse and performs arthroscopic surgery. While the horse is recovering he visits Havre de Grace, whom Dr. Bramlage operated on in 2009 and returned the horse to the racetrack in 2010. Havre de Grace went on to win five major races in 2011 across the U.S. and the prestigious title of Horse of the Year. In November, 2012, at the age of five, she was purchased at auction for a record $10 million to a farm that will breed her to hopefully raise future champion racehorses. "To go to the Kentucky Derby and see a horse you did surgery on win, it's pretty exciting," says Dr. Bramlage, "And professionally rewarding." Veterinarians On Call is presented by Zoetis.
