Forgotten Places: Exploring Kansas Ghost Towns in Sumner County

Exploring the Forgotten Towns of Sumner County, Kansas. Riverdale, Kansas, like many rural places in the Great Plains, faces an uncertain future. Could it ever see a revival? Maybe, if Wichita ever experiences rapid suburban growth… but let’s be real, Wichita hasn’t expanded as fast as places like Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Omaha, or Des Moines. If anything, Riverdale might just vanish like so many other small towns in rural Kansas. But today, we’re not just stopping there—we’re hitting the road to explore the small cities and non-cities of Sumner County! 🛣️ Belle Plaine – Founded in 1871, incorporated in 1884. A small city (or is it a town?) nestled in a valley between the Arkansas and Ninnescah Rivers. 🌊 Oxford – Founded in 1869, right along the Arkansas River. 🏡 Geuda Springs – Population 158. Technically a city, but it sure doesn’t look like one. Also, it’s split between two counties! 🏠 South Haven & Hunnewell – One is small, the other is really small. Hunnewell, founded in 1880, has only 44 residents today! 🐄 Caldwell – A true old Cowtown, founded in 1871 along the historic Chisholm Trail. Named after U.S. Senator Alexander Caldwell. 🌾 Corbin – Population, maybe 12? Ghost Town status achieved. 🏛️ Milan – Named after Milan, Italy, a city with over 1 million people but with just 56 residents, it’s not quite the same… and it never really has been. Kansas is full of quirky, forgotten places, and we’re here to document what’s left of them.
