The Windrush generation came courageously to Britain to take on a variety of skilled jobs. The Caribbean migrants, many who had also served Britain during the war, provided the nation with help towards the production of coal, iron, keeping our public transport afloat by driving our buses and trains and staffing the newly established National Health Service. Despite their invitation here and their dedication to rebuilding Britain, the Windrush generation were treated with discrimination. Many succumbed to racist attacks, and were told ‘to go home’. 75 years on from that day we commemorate those who came to Britain, but what is Windrush day and how should it be commemorated?
