In this second part of our conversation on maqamat (المقامات), renowned Qur’an reciter Dr Ahmad Na‘ina explains why reciters move between different maqams during recitation. He gives a simple and powerful analogy: just as a person shifts positions while resting in order to become comfortable, a reciter may move between maqamat to relieve the voice and sustain the recitation. In this discussion, Dr Na‘ina explains: • How different maqamat engage different parts of the voice • Why changing maqam helps preserve vocal strength • How variation keeps the listener engaged • Why a reciter must match the maqam to the meaning and emotion of the verses For example, verses describing the Day of Judgment may be recited with a tone of gravity and sadness, while verses of mercy, hope, and Paradise call for a different expression. Dr Na‘ina also emphasizes an important principle: Maqamat should serve the Qur’an, not become the goal of recitation. The objective of recitation is always to convey the meaning, emotion, and beauty of the Qur’an, without exaggeration or artificial performance. This is Part 2 of a 3-part series recorded at Isnad Academy Studio.
