On Thursday afternoon, a suspect headed from Lake County into Volusia County in a pickup he stole from the City of Umatilla. The suspect was driving recklessly, exceeding 100 mph and driving on and off the road, nearly causing several head-on collisions. Deputies successfully deployed stop sticks on West New York Avenue and took the suspect into custody after he bailed out and fled a short distance into the woods. A handgun was recovered after the suspect dropped it at the edge of the woods. Deputies attempted to run the serial number on the firearm, but the number had been grinded off. The defendant, Eblair Sylvain, 18 (DOB 8/3/2005), of Umatilla, was charged with grand theft of a vehicle, grand theft of a firearm, reckless driving, and resisting arrest without violence. He was also cited for improper lane change. He is in custody at the Volusia County Branch Jail with $25,000 bond as of this writing.
