Instead, they wanted to try to up the drama by making it seem like she was having a redemption arc, only to ultimately turn to the “dark side.” But they pulled it off so sloppily that their intentions were clear from the very beginning. I think the reason the hatred for this decision is so strong is because of how terribly it was written. If it was done with more care—showing Chloé’s back and forth between evil and good and really delving into her struggle and her eventual decision to give up, it wouldn’t have gotten the reaction it did. But because the writers aren’t very good, or weren’t paid enough, or whatever other reason, they decided they wanted this twist and didn’t really think about how to pay it off. That’s why the whole thing is so sloppy—suddenly Chloé is good and everyone trusts her implicitly for no reason, and then suddenly she’s back to the way she was, and we’re all supposed to feel some way about it. If they had put any care and attention into it, I don’t think it would have gotten the reaction it did. But like I said, I personally never fell for Chloé’s false redemption arc. Honestly, I get a little annoyed whenever I see people bashing the writers or Thomas because they think Chloé should have been redeemed, since I don’t think that was ever their intention. Why are you assuming their intentions, especially when Thomas himself said directly that she wasn’t meant to be redeemed? Don’t mistake me for a Thomas defender—he’s a terrible director and the show would probably be a lot better if he wasn’t involved—but it’s aggravating to see people attacking him over a plot point that he himself has confirmed doesn’t exist. This may sound hypocritical coming from me, but the amount of hatred directed toward him just because people got a little too attached to Chloé is baffling. She is HIS character, and this is HIS story. What gives you the right to say he “ruined” her character development when he’s literally told you that she’s irredeemable? He knows her better than anyone—he created her, after all! It’s entirely up to him if she’s capable of change! I can and will always agree that it’s terrible writing. Also, they brought this reaction upon themselves for trying to bait and switch the fans in the first place. But it is a bit frustrating for me to have everyone in my comments talking about this constantly and hating on ME for not agreeing with them. I don’t even dislike Chloé herself that much, it’s her stans that really annoy me. And I bet Thomas feels the same way. Again, he’s not a good director, but he IS a human person who constantly gets hate because he made a story decision people didn’t like. From u/ShowerWriter on Reddit: “I don't think [Thomas] hates Chloé. I think he probably got very annoyed with fans who messaged him constantly about redeeming Chloé ‘properly’ on Twitter and then maybe decided to be a little petty about Chloé in future seasons.” Sorry to quote Reddit, of all places, but I completely agree. Of course, Thomas probably shouldn’t be so petty toward literal children, but if the stans annoy me, then I can only imagine how annoying they must seem to him. And again, I’m not defending Thomas. He’s super childish (heck, he wrote HIMSELF into his own show, how self-centered can you be?) But in this one instance, I empathize with him, and I do not approve of all the hatred y’all send him over this, especially in my own comments. Those are all my thoughts about Chloé and the whole redemption arc thing. My apologies for getting a little heated—this annoys me more than any terrible writing ever could. That said, see y’all in the next one, which should be a lot better. Hopefully. I might literally go insane if it’s not.
