The history of Perth has been defined by the Swan River since people have been living on its shores. The Noongar Whadjuk people have their stories which are embedded along the riverbank, while the European settlement identified the benefits of a life lived by the water. It is not known when the first jetty at Mends Street was built, however, with the opening of the Perth Zoo in October 1898 it was recognised that a regular cross-river ferry service was needed. Therefore, at about that time, an existing jetty was widened to 15 feet and an existing ferry service which ran between William Street and Queen Street Jetty was extended to the 'new' Mends Street Jetty (Queen Street Jetty is no longer open to the ferry ). Joseph Charles and partner S. W. Copley started to operate the PS Duchess, a locally constructed vessel. Duchess made its inaugural run to Mends Street Jetty on the 11th December 1898, and plied the route for the next 29 years. This private ferry service was eventually merged into the State Transport System (Transperth) and the jetty was rebuilt in 1990. Today the ferry is operated by a private company on behalf of Transperth, you can pay the operator on the boat, or from ticket machines at each jetty, or use the Transperth Smartrider Travelcard. The Paddle Steamer "Decoy" is moored at Mends St. Jetty, this is a 1986 local built replica of the original PS Decoy, and used for private charter, corporate events, weddings, etc. The original Decoy was built in Scotland, shipped to Melbourne in crates and rebuilt in 1891, after working in Victoria in 1905 it made its way to Fremantle under it's own steam . In 1909 it was towed back to Melbourne, and now is moored on the River Murray at Mannum, it was a working boat until 1932, the last I could find is in a list of Murray River Paddle Steamers, in which it says "..became a houseboat". Both were steam powered and the Perth Decoy represents the last steam powered sea going paddle steamer in the Southern Hemisphere. Fittingly the bell from the original Decoy has been transferred to the local built Decoy. Elizabeth Quay rail and bus stations are a few minutes away from the Elizabeth Quay Jetty. Perth Zoo is 500m from the Mends Street Jetty, the area also has many shops, bars, and restaurants within walking distance.
