August 2000 shoot out and siege with police in Dapto, NSW, Australia

In August 2000 a 40 year old male armed offender, who was a registered, but unemployed at the time security guard, fired upon police who were attending his residence in relation to a domestic dispute. His wife and two small children were able to flee as he opened fire upon arriving police. Officers were pinned behind their police truck for 3.5 hours with around 100 shots being fired at them before being rescued. The officers narrowly avoided being shot and killed throughout the ordeal. The siege started about 8.30pm and ended about 3pm on the following day with the offender surrendering to tactical police from the Sydney based Tactical Operations Unit supported by the Illawarra State Protection Support Unit (SPSU).
