The Metropolitan Youth Symphony (MYS) performing Grace Miedziak's original composition "Seereise" (Sea Voyage) at the Arlene Schnitzer Hall in Portland, OR. Recorded March 8th, 2020. Conducted by Sam Ross and directed by Raúl Gómez. Thank you to everyone involved with MYS for making this possible! Program Notes: As a senior in high school, I've been focused on researching and applying to music schools all around the country. The thought of leaving home and embarking on a new adventure was the first inspiration for this piece. As my composition began to evolve, I imagined myself at the bow of a ship, venturing into the unknown and starting a new chapter of my life. The beginning mood of the piece portrays contemplation and preparation, then, the powerful melodies in the main theme embody courage and adventure. While trepidation is woven into the piece, bravery takes over with a triumphant ending. The instruments represent various emotions felt when setting out on a journey. For example, I believe French horns have a powerful and inspirational sound, whereas flutes are mysterious and could represent doubt. The violas and violins dovetailing in the middle evoke anxiety, but they reinforce courage and adventure when playing in unison with the French horns during the main theme. "Seereise" means "Sea Voyage" in German, and I felt that this title fits perfectly with my vision for the piece. I hope that when you listen to my composition, you imagine yourself on your next great adventure.
