Alta, Norway—a place so far north that if you go much further, you’ll need a passport for the Arctic. It’s a land of fjords, frozen tundra, and more snow than a Hollywood Christmas film. And as if that wasn’t enough, it’s also one of the best places on the planet to witness the northern lights, which is basically nature’s way of showing off. Normally, people come here to mush dogs across the ice, catch fish through a hole in the ground, or stand around in the freezing dark going, “Ooooh” at the sky. But this week? This week, it was all about running. Yes, the inaugural Aurora Marathon took place—because apparently, someone thought, You know what this Arctic landscape needs? Endurance athletes! Twenty-five runners from twelve different countries lined up, presumably questioning their life choices. The winner? Michal Dabrowski from Poland, who was probably trained by outrunning polar bears.
