The Breakers Mansion During the Gilded Age, America’s wealthiest families headed to Newport, Rhode Island. One must-see mansion is The Breakers. It was built between 1893 and 1895 as a summer getaway for Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a member of the wealthy Vanderbilt family. The 70-room mansion was designed by Richard Morris Hunt in the Renaissance Revival style using marble imported from Africa and Italy. It has spectacular views of the sea and you’ll enjoy exploring both the indoor mansion and outdoor property. Newport Cliff Walk The Newport Cliff Walk is one of the best attractions in Newport, Rhode Island. The Cliff Walk is a 3 and a half mile walkway that borders the shore line. Enjoy beautiful ocean views, with crashing waves. We went in the spring time and enjoyed all of the yellow daffodil blooms. It felt good to be outdoors and walking, while breathing the fresh air and enjoying the incredible views. Fort Adams State Park Fort Adams is a former United States Army post situated at the mouth of the Newport Harbor. It was established on July 4, 1799 and was named after President John Adams. Its first commander was Captain John Henry, who was later instrumental in starting the War of 1812. Fort Adams served as home to soldiers from 1824-1950. You can take a guided tour featuring officer’s quarters, overlooks, walls and tunnels or just explore the grounds on your own. We loved the Fort Adams Bay scenic walk. It’s a 2.5 mile loop around the park. The park is also home to popular Jazz and Folk festivals. The Newport Marriott There are a lot of great places to stay in Newport, Rhode Island. We stayed at the Newport Marriott and really enjoyed it. It’s a very spacious and clean hotel. It features a beautiful indoor balcony. It has a huge fitness center and a heated indoor pool that we had a lot of fun swimming in. It has spectacular harbor views and plenty of awesome restaurants and shops in the neighborhood that you can just walk to. In addition, it has great access to public transportation. In fact, we didn’t use our car at all, we just hopped on the trolly bus (that was never crowded) and got an inexpensive ride to all of the local attractions. We highly recommend Newport, Rhode Island!
