In the period of Muslim occupation this place was renamed al-Marg Hamal and it seems that in 1172 it was occupied by Christians when the Almohad troops of Sultan Abú Yaqúb Yusúf, who were heading towards the city of Huete, took it by surprise, they killed his men and enslaved women and children. In 1177, King Alfonso VIII conquered the city of Cuenca. Two years later it is probable that he also conquered this Muslim site, after the capture of Zafra de Záncara (1179). The castle then took the name of the gentleman García Muñoz, who accompanied the king, and who confirms three of his documents (one in 1167 and two in 1179). García Muñoz should have been appointed warden of the Castle and in charge of its repopulation, hence the population, henceforth, is known as Castillo de Garcimuñoz. The repopulation of Alfonso VIII was carried out with people from Extremadura and Burgos.
