Emily Oster discusses the uses and limitations of AI in economics, stating that AI is a tool but should not take over human decision making. This is a clip from a larger conversation co-hosted by the JNBC on November 12, 2025. This was a debut dialogue in a new conversation series that pairs Brown faculty members from strikingly different fields of study for dynamic, extemporaneous, audience-inclusive discussion of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This event was a collaboration between the office of the Associate Provost for AI and the JNBC. This first event featured dialogue between Emily Oster, Professor of Economics and Loukas Gouskos, Professor of Physics and was moderated by Michael Littman, Associate Provost for AI, and Kevin McLaughlin, Director of the John Nicholas Brown Center for Advanced Study (JNBC). Economist Emily Oster (JJE Goldman Sachs University Professor of Economics) brought expertise in health and statistical methods, using data to inform behavioral decisions. Physicist Loukas Gouskos (Christopher M. Barter Assistant Professor of Physics) is on the cutting edge of AI/Deep Learning applications, handling enormous volumes of data in experimental particle physics at CERN.
