Join us on a meaningful and unforgettable family road trip along the Normandy Coast in France, a destination we had been dreaming of for years. Using a long weekend plus one extra day, we turned this into a 5-day Normandy itinerary, which honestly felt like the bare minimum due to driving distances and the sheer amount of history in the region. We began our journey with a drive into northern France, stopping in a charming coastal town near Étretat, known for its dramatic white cliffs, stone beaches, and relaxed seaside atmosphere. After exploring the beach and enjoying local bakeries, we continued on to Honfleur, a picturesque harbor town with colorful buildings, local shops, French pastries, and a classic carousel right along the port. From there, we headed to one of the most historically significant places in the world — the D-Day beaches of Normandy. We visited Omaha Beach, Utah Beach, the Airborne Museum, the Azeville Battery, and several key World War II sites including bunkers, tunnels, and museums. Traveling here with kids brought a unique perspective, opening the door to meaningful conversations about history, sacrifice, and remembrance. One of the most impactful stops was the Normandy American Cemetery, where rows of white headstones overlook the coastline. It was a powerful and emotional experience, and an important moment for learning and reflection as a family. We also explored the Mulberry Harbors, temporary harbors built during WWII, and the Longues-sur-Mer Battery, which still overlooks the sea today. If you love World War II history, you could easily spend one to two weeks exploring Normandy’s museums and historical landmarks. To end the trip, we drove south to the iconic Mont-Saint-Michel, a medieval island abbey dating back to the year 708. Walking across the causeway and entering the walled city felt like stepping into a fairytale — though crowds were heavy. While the abbey itself was impressive, our favorite views were honestly from a distance, watching sheep graze in the surrounding fields. This Normandy trip was equal parts educational, emotional, beautiful, and family-friendly, and it’s a destination we would absolutely recommend — especially if you enjoy slow travel, history, and meaningful experiences.
