The Sri Selva Vinayagar Temple, commonly known as the Golden Temple of Prai, is a prominent Hindu temple located in Taman Inderawasih, Prai, Penang, Malaysia. Dedicated to Lord Vinayagar (Ganesha), the temple holds deep religious significance for the local Hindu community. It began over a century ago as a simple wooden shrine built by Indian laborers working in nearby railway and port facilities. In 1967, the temple was reconstructed as a permanent structure to accommodate the growing number of devotees. Over the years, rapid urban development, including the construction of highways and overpasses, raised the surrounding road levels, leaving the temple about five feet below ground. To address these challenges, the temple committee initiated a large-scale reconstruction project costing around RM 3 million. The new design features traditional South Indian Dravidian architecture, complete with ornate gopurams (temple towers), golden domes, and detailed carvings. The gleaming gold accents on the temple’s exterior earned it the nickname “Golden Temple.” Its vibrant appearance and sacred atmosphere have made it a well-known landmark in Prai. Inside, the temple houses sanctums with elaborately decorated idols and hosts daily prayers and major festivals like Vinayagar Chaturthi. It also serves as a centre for cultural events and religious education for the Hindu community. Despite modernization, the temple remains deeply rooted in spiritual traditions. It reflects the resilience and unity of the local Hindu population. The temple continues to attract both devotees and visitors interested in culture and architecture. Today, the Golden Temple of Prai stands as a symbol of faith, heritage, and transformation in the heart of Penang. Close to 90% of Hindus live in the Indian subcontinent but the effect of Hinduism can be seen all over the world. This series is a humble initiative to explore the spread of Hindu culture beyond the shores of India by presenting various Hindu temples throughout the world and taking the viewers through the history of each temple against a Carnatic music background.
