For the last eight years, David has been creating Slow Art in the public realm. The first of these projects, called SlowDancing, premiered in the summer of 2007 on the façade of the New York State Theater facing the central plaza of Lincoln Center. It remained there for over a month and gathered a capacity crowd each night. It was not unusual for people to stay through the entire run of an evening – roughly five hours, and even often return one or several times. Do you want to learn more about Slow Art? David Michalek was born and raised in California. He lives and works in New York City. Michalek's body of work ranges from photography, drawing, video/sound installations and live performance to site-specific works of public art. His focus over the past ten years has been closely tied to his interest in the contemporary person, which he explores through the use of performance techniques, storytelling, movement and gesture. He conceives of the human body as a metaphor for society, religion, politics and sexuality. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
