This presentation will focus on a burgeoning theoretical framework and set of measures for racialized forms of resentment. The framework grounds resentment in justice motives rather than symbolic racial predispositions that blend anti-black affect and individualism. Conceptualizing resentment as a threat-based reaction to justice rather than prejudice also allows for a more robust and inclusive framework that helps to understand African Americans’ resentment toward Whites. Summarily, the research seeks to advance the study of racial attitudes by investigating racialized resentment as a natural byproduct of political decision making, thereby illustrating how non-racist motives can enable racism. This presentation was given by David Wilson from the University of Delaware as part of the Blalock Lecture Series.
