Why are so many PhD candidates struggling? What makes academia so toxic? Here's an exploration of major issues such as overwork, power imbalances and chronic stress that early stage researchers often encounter. I also touch on some of the additional struggles faced by international students and workers. This video is based on my experience and that of my peers doing PhDs, master's and postdocs in biology / the natural sciences. While my perspecitve may be limited, based on what I've seen online, a lot of these problems seem to be encountered by other academics in different sectors as well! These reasons are also why I decided to quit academia to go work in industry. You could not pay me enough to do a postdoc! Here are some of the studies and resources I mentioned in the video: "Evidence for a mental health crisis in graduate education" (might be paywalled): https://www.nature.com/articles/nbt.4089 "PhDs: the tortuos truth" (Nature Report featuring a Survey of over 6000 graduate students): https://www.nature.com/articles/d4158... As there are so many awful instances of power abuse in academia, it would feel strange to single out certain stories as examples here - a quick google search will reveal hundreds of cases and a lot of them address very sensitive topics, so be warned. Some of the headlines and links feature terms that will probably restrict this video's visibility, so if you want more information and resources hit me up in the comments. 🎨 My Redbubble Store 🎨 - if you liked some of the artwork seen in the video, you can buy things like prints, stickers, mugs and shirts here: https://www.redbubble.com/people/Cath... --- Chapters: 00:00 Introduction 02:04 Survey 03:04 (Over)work culture 7:40 Long Term Stress 10:20 Optionlessness 13:14 Not very progressive 17:11 Power imbalances & toxicity 22:23 No future & stability 24:05 Conclusion
