For years, I've been taken with Gordon Lightfoot's epic, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald," but I've always found the haunting story behind the song elusive for a solo instrumental. As instrumentals go, this one was a challenge for me. The song sails on its lyrics, and Lightfoot's masterful storytelling. What I've tried to capture is a bit of the essence that lies just beyond words, embedded in Lightfoot's poignant melody. I've tried to illustrate a sense of the movement and drama of the tale through a suspenseful variation on the theme. #GordonLightfoot #EdmundFitzgerald #fingerstyle This was filmed on a chilly February day at the Memorial Waterfront Park on Charleston Harbor, and one unplanned event happens right around the 1:24 min mark in the film. Entering the frame toward my left shoulder, just above the headstock of my guitar, is an imposing ocean-going freighter, and at about 1:59, the ship's superstructure becomes visible. At the point where I try to evoke a sense of foreboding foreshadowing the ship's peril, it slips behind my back, and does not reappear. I like to think that unbeknownst to me as I played, the Edmund Fitzgerald returned but for a brief moment heading out to sea.
