I've been barefoot running for 4 years. But for some surfaces (like gravel and snow) it's nice to have huaraches. Huaraches are a type of Mexican running sandal. The book "Born to Run" helped popularize them among American barefoot runners. Lots of people make their own huaraches. There are many YouTube how-to videos that tell you to purchase some expensive rubber insole material, trace the shape of your foot on it, and then cut holes for the laces. This takes a fair amount of time and money. Here's an easier & quicker (and very inexpensive) way to make a simple pair of comfortable huaraches. 1) Start with a pair of flip-flops. Why flip-flops? They are already the right shape, and the holes are in the right place. Also, they're much more affordable than buying a sheet of rubber insole material. Try to get a pair of flip-flops that are flat and thin. I bought my mine for 98 cents at Walmart. 2) Snip off the thongs from the flip-flops. 3) Buy a cord to use as your huaraches laces. I got mine for $2 at Walmart, in the kids' craft section. 4) Watch this video to learn how to lace up the huaraches. Tips: A) Buy a cord that's plenty long (10+ feet is good). When making the huaraches, you'll need to find out what length to snip the cord for each huarache. First, use the entire cord to lace up one of the huaraches (using the procedure in the video). Then snip the cord long enough to tie the final knot. B) To prevent the cord from fraying, singe each end with a flame. C) One end of the cord goes down through the hole located between the first two toes. To prevent it from coming back up through, tie a knot on the bottom, or use a glue gun to create a small ball of glue on the end. This will keep that end stuck to the bottom of the huaraches.
