Recently an artificial retinal implant has been FDA approved for use in the United States. Learn more about this exciting technology from Isaac Porter, MD in this episode of A State of Sight. This retinal prosthesis is initially approved by the FDA for use in patients with retinitis pigmentosa, which is an inherited disease that causes progressive vision loss and can lead to blindness. Studies have shown that once this implant is placed, some vision can be recovered. Although this new type of vision is limited, it can provide some sight to the recipient. The technology in this prosthesis is impressive. A camera attached to glasses projects images wirelessly to the unit that then sends signals to the retina through an electrode implanted in the eye. These signals are then transferred to nerves and to the brain.
