Kumarajiva traces the life of the namesake character whose unfaltering devotion and relentless dedication to his cause; the pursuit of enlightenment, led to one of the most important developments in the Buddhist movement in China. The son of an Indian noble and Kucha kingdom princess, Kumarajiva was a gifted child who was said to have memorised many Buddhist texts at a tender age under the guidance of his equally-brilliant mother; a devout Buddhist who later became a nun. Possessing a keen interest and aptitude for deciphering and understanding abstract teachings within complex Buddhist sutras, Kumarajiva forsake his arranged marriage to his betrothed princess and entered monkhood in pursuit of enlightenment. During that time, mother and son meet a mysterious monk who foretold that Kumarajiva was destined for greater things. Later on, under the influence of his mother, Kumarajiva committed himself to the undertaking of a monumental task; the translation of Buddhist scriptures from Sanskrit to Chinese.
