This is the story of the Belgian army in 1914/18 and 1940, more particularly a cavalry unit called the Guides Regiment. After the battle of Haelen (1914), in which a brewery was fortified and 8 German cavalry charges defeated in one day, they fought 4 years in the trenches, along with the French and British allies. In August 1918, thanks to the arrival of American forces and the actions led by the Canadian and Australian troops, an offensive finally succeeds and pushes the Germans behind the Hindenburg line. This is called the "hundred days" offensive. The Belgians attacked on the Northernmost part of the Western Front, and the liberation of Flanders gave the Guides the opportunity to conduct one of the last cavalry charges, near Bruges. In 1940, Belgium was invaded again and the Regiment did its best to slow down the German armies, hoping for a massive French and English counter-attack. They held out 18 days, and helped providing some time for the Allies to retreat to Great Britain and continue the war. I hope you liked this short movie!
