This question is investigated by a professional team of historians, archaeologists and architects in the 3-part documentary film "Millennium Kyiv. The city where the history of Kyivan Rus began." In the 2nd series, we investigate how Kyiv turned from a small settlement into the capital of a large medieval state and show a 3D reconstruction of Kyiv during the reign of Prince Volodymyr Svyatoslavovich, at the beginning of the 11th century. This is the period when Kyiv was actively developed and the first stone buildings of Kyivan Rus were built here - the Church of the Tithe and princely palaces of Volodymyr. 3D reconstruction of the entire city of Kyiv of this period is being performed for the first time.
