Then we venture off the tourist trail into Šuto Orizari or Shutka, the so‑called “Gypsy Slum” which is anything but a slum. It’s the world’s largest Roma settlement, and the only place on earth where Roma people govern themselves. 40,000 Roma live in this community, which has its own elected mayors, schools, and TV station. Finally, we drive into the countryside, where a humble village graveyard teaches a lesson in love you’ll never forget. Along the way, you’ll hear insider voices, taste hearty Balkan food, explore vibrant nightlife, witness the bold culture of the Roma people… and come face to face with a near‑fatal incident in Shutka that will leave you speechless! North Macedonia's history is characterized by its ancient roots, including the legacy of the ancient Macedonian kingdom of Alexander the Great, as well as its more recent Ottoman and Yugoslav past. The country gained independence in 1991 following the breakup of Yugoslavia, and since then, it has embarked on a journey of nation-building and democratic development, still navigating identity between East and West.
