Nepal is set to witness the dawn of a new political era. 35-year-old Balendra Shah - a rapper-turned politician and former mayor of Kathmandu - is set to become the youngest Prime Minister of the Himalayan nation. His party - the Rastriya Swatantra Party – is on course to win a landslide majority in Parliament. The RSP’s thumping win marks the first time that a single party ha garnered a majority in Nepal – which has a two-system format which makes it difficult for any party to win outright. But decimating the traditional, established parties, Balendra Shah’s RSP is headed towards a sweeping victory in the elections. In fact, the former Prime Minister Oli suffered heavy defeat in his parliamentary constituency – about a margin of 50,000 votes – at the hands of Balendra Shah. Parliamentary elections were held in Nepal on 5th March - barely three years after the previous national vote. It was necessitated by the unprecedented political upheaval led by Gen Z, which culminated in the worst unrest in decades and resulted in the premature resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli in September 2025. The elections were held under the government headed by the interim Prime Minister, Sushila Karki. Following the voting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people and the Government of Nepal on the successful and peaceful conduct of elections, describing it as a proud moment in Nepal’s democratic journey. In a message shared on the social media platform X, the Prime Minister said it was heartening to see the people of Nepal exercise their democratic rights with great enthusiasm. He said the successful elections marked a historic milestone for the neighbouring nation. “As a close friend and neighbour, India remains steadfast in its commitment to working closely with the people of Nepal and their new Government to scale new heights of shared peace, progress and prosperity,” PM Modi said in his post.
