In this research published in Royal Society Open Science, the authors employ advanced computational structural mechanics to reconstruct how early wheel-and-axle technology could have evolved from simple rollers. Their models reveal three pivotal innovations driven by the demanding environment of narrow, ore-laden mines: Grooved rollers—prevented loads from slipping off. Wheelset formation—fixed wheels on a central axle enhanced clearance and load-bearing ability. Independent wheels on an axle—emerged later to improve maneuverability. Environmental constraints in the mines acted like selective evolutionary pressures, shaping the design of the wheel across centuries.
