The Diocese of Lugazi was erected on 23rd February 1997, with Bishop Matthias Ssekamanya as its First Ordinary until 4th November 2014, when Pope Francis appointed a new shepherd in the names of The Rt. Rev. Christopher Kakooza, who was installed as Bishop of Lugazi on 3rd January 2015. This territory was formerly part of the Archdiocese of Kampala and is now a suffragan of the metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala. The diocese’s mission focuses on spiritual growth, evangelization, and social transformation, supported by numerous institutions such as seminaries, catechetical centers, hospitals, health centers, and schools.
