Metal detecting - Bucket list find - Medieval Pilgrim’s Ampulla Found on 2nd March 2025. This is a medieval pilgrim's ampulla which is a small container made of lead, that held holy water or oil from religious sites. Pilgrims would take these ampullae home as souvenirs and to maintain a connection to their journey. These ampulla’s were mass-produced and were probably relatively inexpensive. The ampullae was a proof of pilgrimage and a talisman against harm. The design of the ampulla was often decorated with images that linked the contents of the bottle to the shrine or holy place that it came from. Significant of the ampulla that they were an important part of medieval life and were a way for people to show their devotion and strengthen their faith in God. For further information about these items I added a link of a very informative video of its history from MudFaceGirl youtube channel. Highly recommended. 🎵 Celtic down by MissyWhimsyArt MudFaceGirl youtube channel • Pilgrims' Ampullas of Walsingham , Norfolk.
