Ultrasounds and Their Applications Ultrasounds are sound waves with frequencies higher than 20,000 Hz, which is above the hearing limit of the human ear. We cannot hear ultrasound, but many animals and modern machines use these high-frequency waves because they have special properties. Ultrasound waves can travel long distances, reflect sharply from small objects, and carry high energy due to their high frequency. These qualities make them extremely useful in nature, medicine, industry, and daily life. One of the most interesting natural uses of ultrasound is found in bats. Bats cannot see well at night, so they use a system called echolocation to fly safely and hunt insects. A bat emits very high-frequency ultrasound waves from its mouth or nose. When these waves hit an object, such as a tree or an insect, they reflect back as echoes. By listening to these echoes, bats can judge the distance, shape, size, and even texture of objects around them. Ultrasounds help bats lead an active life in complete darkness, making them one of the best natural navigators. Another common application of ultrasound is in automatic door openers. Although these devices sometimes use infrared too, many models use ultrasound. The system sends out ultrasound waves continuously. When a person approaches the door, the waves hit the person and reflect back. The automatic door system detects a change in the reflected waves and immediately signals the motor to open the door. This makes entrance and exit smooth and hands-free in malls, hospitals, and offices. SONAR (Sound Navigation and Ranging) is an important technology that also uses ultrasound. Ships and submarines use SONAR to find the depth of the sea, locate underwater rocks, and even detect enemy submarines. The system sends an ultrasound pulse into the water. The waves travel, hit the sea floor or an object, and return as echoes. By measuring the time taken by the echo to return, the distance of the object can be calculated. SONAR is widely used in ocean exploration, fishing, and naval defense. In industry, one of the most valuable uses of ultrasound is in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT). In this method, ultrasound waves are passed through the parts of machines, metal plates, pipes, or aircraft wings to check for cracks or defects. If there is a flaw inside the material, the ultrasound reflects differently. This allows engineers to detect problems without cutting, breaking, or damaging the object. NDT ensures safety in buildings, bridges, vehicles, and manufacturing industries. Ultrasound is also used in ultrasonic cleaners to clean jewellery, watches, lenses, and machine components. The cleaner contains a liquid, usually water with a mild cleaning solution. When ultrasound waves pass through the liquid, they cause cavitation—the formation and bursting of tiny bubbles. These bubbles create strong scrubbing action that removes dirt even from the smallest and hardest-to-reach places where normal brushing cannot reach. That is why ultrasonic cleaners are extremely effective for delicate items. Overall, ultrasounds play an important role in both nature and technology. From helping bats fly at night to opening doors automatically, from exploring oceans to ensuring the safety of machines, and from cleaning jewellery to inspecting structures—ultrasounds have become a powerful tool in modern life. Their ability to reflect, penetrate materials, and produce high-energy vibrations makes them useful in a wide range of scientific and practical applications.
