After many years of consideration, I decided to finally head to Oakland and definitively railfan at Jack London Square. I decided to attempt to provide a comprehensive viewpoint of this renowned spot and utilize the opportunity to film starting from the south end of the Amtrak Station (near Oak St.) and progressively make my way to the north end of the street running and atop the parking structure at Clay St. Jack London Square has always intrigued me mainly for its street running action not too common in the U.S., but also due to its location near the waterfront, trackside buildings, and proximity to Amtrak’s Oakland Maintenance Facility (OMF). All this combined provides for excellent horn action and echoes; all with the help of engineers laying on the horn ! Additionally, the viewpoint from atop the parking structure provides great views of the Bay Area and San Francisco in the distance. Due to JLS serving as a terminus for San Joaquin and some Capitol Corridor trains, most of these trains can be seen deadheading to/from the OMF. The interesting thing is that Amtrak trains only use Main 2 (east track) to access the station, whereas Main 1 bypasses the station altogether and is mainly used for freight. In the end, whether it is the countless amounts of horn action, the street running, the many vantage points, or just the amount of activity, Oakland - Jack London Square is certainly an awesome place to railfan ! Train 1 : Amtrak Deadhead with CabCar #6962 & P42DC #192. This trainset was originally from Amtrak 733 that deadheaded from the Oakland Coliseum Station and remained at Jack London Square shortly before proceeding to the Amtrak Oakland Maintenance Facility (OMF). Train 2 : Amtrak Deadhead with SC-44 #2102 & CabCar #8310. Coming from the OMF, this trainset will soon become 716 bound for Bakersfield. Train 3 : Amtrak 716 with CabCar #8310 & SC-44 #2102. Nice horn action from the engineer ! Train 4 : Amtrak 11 (Coast Starlight) with P42DC #7 & #167. Originally upon my arrival, 11 was sitting at the station boarding passengers. Due to prior freight congestion, 11 was already running behind schedule. After arriving into Oakland, a crossing incident south of the station further delayed the train. Due to the incident occurring close to other scheduled arrivals, 11 had to reverse towards the OMF to wait for those trains (as seen before this train) as well as refuel and restock supplies. After getting a clear, 11 resumed on south for Los Angeles via the Central Valley detour due to track work at Van Nuys. An interesting day for the Starlight and a nice surprise catch for sure ! Train 5 : Amtrak 737 with SC-44 #2105 & CabCar #6961. The Siemens Charger horns sure do make for some loud, awesome horn action ! 08:30 Train 6 : Amtrak Deadhead with F59PHI #2003 & CabCar #8303. This trainset will soon become 734 to Sacramento. Train 7 : Amtrak 732 with CabCar #8304 & SC-44 #2101. Nice horn action ! Train 8 : Amtrak 713 with F59PHI #2013 & NPCU #90218. Train 9 : Amtrak 734 with CabCar #8303 & F59PHI #2003. Nice, long horn action from the engineer ! Train 10 : Amtrak Deadhead with NPCU #90218 & F59PHI #2013. Friendly crew ! 18:09 Train 11 : Amtrak Deadhead with F59PHI #2011 & CabCar #6962. This trainset will soon become 736 to Sacramento. Nice horn action from the engineer ! Train 12 : Amtrak 741 with P42DC #166 & CabCar #8305. Always nice to see a P42 on intercity trains ! Train 13 : Amtrak 736 with CabCar #6962 & F59PHI #2011. Great horn action from the engineer rolling through JLS ! Train 14 : Amtrak Deadhead with F59PHI #2013 & NPCU #90218. This trainset will soon become 718 to Bakersfield. Nice horn action from the engineer ! Train 15 : Amtrak 738 with CabCar #6961 & SC-44 #2105. Love the horn echoes ! 24:55 Train 16 : Amtrak 743 with F59PHI #2001 & CabCar #8307. After spending most of the day at street level and making it to the north end of the street running segment, I decided to head up onto the pedestrian bridge / parking structure and continue my railfanning from a different but uniquely nice vantage points going into the evening. Nice horn action ! Train 17 : Amtrak 718 with NPCU #90218 & F59PHI #2013. Train 18 : Amtrak 742 with CabCar #8302 & SC-44 #2106. Train 19 : Amtrak 745 with SC-44 #2101 & CabCar #8304. Great horn action from the engineer rolling into JLS ! Train 20 : Amtrak 715 with F59PHI #2012 & CabCar #6964. 35:25 Train 21 : Amtrak Deadhead with CabCar #6964 & F59PHI #2012. Not long after disembarking passengers at its final destination, the set from 715 heads to the OMF for the night. Train 22 : Amtrak 747 with F59PHI #2003 & CabCar #8303. With the last glimmer of light setting over San Francisco, 747 appears into Oakland. Train 23 : Amtrak 744 with CabCar #8305 & P42DC #166. With evening settling in, 744 departs for Sacramento with some nice horn action and echoes ! After this train, I called it an excellent day of railfanning and headed for home. Thanks for Watching !
