In the summer of 1943, the fighting in the central Solomons shifted to the waters around New Georgia. Over the course of several weeks, American and Japanese destroyer forces clashed repeatedly in a series of night battles fought at close range and under difficult conditions. From the sudden encounter at Blackett Strait, Kula Gulf and the costly engagement off Kolombangara to the ambush at Vella Gulf, the skirmish off Horaniu, and the final battle near Vella Lavella, the campaign revealed how both navies adapted to the changing momentum in the Solomons. This documentary covers the entire naval campaign in sequence, tracing each battle and the decisions that shaped the outcome in the Slot during the summer and early autumn of 1943.
