In this week’s episode, we discuss the similarities between top performers in sports and startups, specifically how mental health challenges affect them. Dr. Auerbach and Sarah touch on the major contributors to these challenges, such as COVID-related uncertainty, economic stressors, social media overload, and unrealistic expectations of success. The stigma around seeking help is discussed, with a focus on coaching being an effective tool for bridging mental performance gaps in athletes and startup founders alike. Additionally, diversity among those making investment decisions is emphasized as crucial for identifying talent that may otherwise be overlooked. We discuss the importance of coaching in helping people overcome limiting beliefs and mental hurdles to become top performers. They also talk about how storytelling is an essential part of leadership, particularly for startup founders who need to communicate their company's mission and values effectively. Dr. Auerbach emphasizes the importance of task cohesion and relational cohesion in building effective teamwork, which can be achieved by aligning individual values around shared goals while leaving room for individuality and different coping styles. We further talk about the importance of a shared mental model and aligning as a team towards a larger vision. They suggest that founders should give some freedom to the rest of the team to shape their ideas so they feel connected to this larger vision. The conversation then shifts towards mental health in leadership roles, where coaches and therapists can offer support for high performers who may struggle with isolation due to their position. Sharing personal struggles can be seen as a source of strength rather than weakness, empowering others to seek help if needed.
