Most of the spots we've been planting were previously under concrete (either the previous house's foundation or their old driveway) so the dirt was all super compacted. Digging it up and improving the soil was probably the most time consuming aspect of this. In retrospect, maybe we should've tried to find some machinery we could rent, lol. We've been kind of winging it with the design and will change things around a bit as we move on, but things are gradually coming together. Our next step will be to add a walkway, but now that we've reached the humid part of Japanese summer we might have to wait until fall for the heavy work.
