HONG KONG: PRO DEMOCRACY MOVEMENT DEMONSTRATIONS

(3 Jun 1996) Cantonese/Nat Supporters of democracy for China have brought Hong Kong to a standstill in remembrance of those who died during the Tiananmen Square demonstrations on June 4th, 1989, nearly seven years ago. The pro-democracy movement is stronger outside China, led by dissidents who can demonstrate against the regime from the safety of Hong Kong. But with the imminent hand over of Hong Kong to the Chinese the protestors may have to find another safe haven for their headquarters. Hong Kong's commemorations of the bloody crackdown on the June 4th Tiananmen Square demonstrations for democracy brought downtown Hong Kong to a standstill on Sunday. More than 3-thousand protesters calling for democracy in China marched on the headquarters of Xinhua the official Chinese News Agency. Continued international attention of the regime in China is largely due to such demonstrations. With next summer's transfer of the colony to Chinese rule the protestors may find they risk arrest or imprisonment if they continue to protest after the July handover. Undeterred they pledged to continue their battle for democracy even after the Chinese take over. The movement is conscious of the fact that future demonstrations about the Tiananmen Square massacre and pro-democracy will not be tolerated by the Chinese authorities. But until next year Beijing can only look on. Tsang Gin Sing is a Government legislator and a fervent activist for democratic rights. He knows his time is limited but believes action is needed to keep the pressure on to win democracy in China. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "In order to gain democracy in China all the Chinese around the world will need to step up. If people are only minding their own business, then there is no hope for success." SUPER CAPTION: Tsang Gin Sing, Hong Kong Legislator Tsang Gin Sing's stance against Beijing is one he knows will not be tolerated. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "I think Chinese across the world have not forgotten June 4th incident. Geographically, we are very close to China we feel that we should come out, talk about it and demand that China accepts responsibility for those who were killed." SUPERCAPTION: Tsang Gin Sing, Hong Kong Legislator And there are many in Hong Kong who share the same views. Yet Beijing has long played down the number killed in the demonstration and treats those outside China demonstrating for freedom with utter contempt. Since the Tiananmen massacre, seven years ago, Hong Kong has become a haven for those dissidents who have served jail terms in China for their beliefs. Han Don Feng is one such dissident. He was jailed for two years in China for his part in the Tiananmen demonstrations. In jail he developed tuberculosis and was allowed to travel to America to receive treatment. Whilst there the Chinese authorities invalidated his passport preventing his return. He now lives in Hong Kong where he keeps up a high profile in the pro democratic forum. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) "They ( China ) will continue their control in the short run. In the long run it will be out of control and the pressure will accumulate more and more domestically and in the end it will explode." SUPER CAPTION: Han Don Feng, Chinese Dissident Beijing sees him as an irritant and wants him out of sight. SOUNDBITE: (Cantonese) SUPERCAPTION: Han Don Feng, Chinese Dissident The dissidents believe that defiant political activism in Hong Kong is necessary to make the voice of freedom for those in China heard.
