Song over the clouds (Song over the shoulder) This is an antique a capella song , today preserved in Albanian Alps region, and Accursed Mountains. These types of songs are called, "Songs over the shoulder" (Kenge maje Krahu). Perhaps it got its name from the fact that singers, while singing, would raise their right arm up and place their hand over the ear. The assumption is that this is a way of controlling their voice, because strong echos from the mountains can sometimes be distracting. It may also symbolically direct the sound vibrations they produce, toward the mountains. I called it "song over the clouds" because it is sung in a region where inhabitants mostly live on high mountains "above the clouds." They were isolated mostly to avoid various occupying armies and fighting them from very difficult-to-access areas. These isolation saved these songs, which in modern days, are very close to being extinguished and forgotten. A similar type of song but more polyphonic is also found in Georgia, Sardinia, Corsica and few other regions. These songs are usually sang in duets, without any instruments (a capella). The only sound accompanying the singer, can be natural sounds of high mountains, like bird sounds, thunderstorms, river sounds, wind, and others. This fact also explains the very harsh living conditions where these people lived for centuries in the past... By their lyrical themes, these are mostly songs about bravery, fighting enemies and natural disasters, and also about local heroes and love. Roi Shkreli
