This is the 3-minute highlights version of an 8 day trip from Lewis Pass to St Arnaud via Waiau Pass, Blue Lake and the Travers Saddle. This is a section of Te Araroa. We started at the Cannibal/Ada end of the St James Walkway before heading up the Waiau Valley, over the pass and down to Blue Lake. We then walked down the West Sabine and over the Travers Saddle before finishing at St Arnaud. Day 1: Lewis Pass to Cannibal Gorge Hut Day 2: Cannibal Gorge Hut to campsite 1km short of Christopher Hut (just below the Christopher Cullers Hut. Day 3: Campsite to old Caroline Creek Bivvy site in the Waiau Valley. Day 4: 11 hour day up and over Waiau Pass - I am not the fastest walker up hill! The TA hikers do it much quicker - to campsite 20 minutes past Blue Lake Hut. It was NYE so 50 people at Blue Lake in the hut/tents! Day 5: Back up to look at Blue Lake in the sunshine, afternoon walk down to West Sabine Hut. Day 6: One of the group got sick (we think it was Blue Lake Hut tank water) so a forced rest day at West Sabine. Day 7: West Sabine to Upper Travers Hut. There is limited camping around this hut. Day 8: Big final day down the Travers Valley to John Tait and Lakehead Huts before a cruisy last 10km along Lake Rotoiti to St Arnaud. (Detailed version of the video to follow). Camera gear: Sony A7C, Sony FE 24mm lens, Sony ECM B-10 shotgun microphone, additional footage (particularly when raining iPhone 12. Apologies: this video was one of 4 trips shot with dust on the camera's sensor. Lesson learned - check your footage after every trip and clean the camera!
