Banda leaves ++MUTE++ STORYLINE Joyce Banda was sworn in as president of Malawi at a short ceremony in the capital Lilongwe on Saturday, ending days of speculation in the southeastern African republic. Banda replaces President Bingu wa Mutharika, who died on Thursday. The government of Malawi, only confirmed the president's death on Saturday, two days after the leader of the impoverished country died and a day after it was announced by doctors. The delayed announcement and Saturday's ceremony led to speculation that politicians were squabbling over the succession, although Banda was vice president and should have succeeded under the constitution. Speculation has suggested that his body was flown to South Africa, to buy time for politicians to work out a succession plan. Local and international media had carried reports of his death since Thursday, and Malawians had furiously discussed it among themselves and on social media platforms. President Mutharika had favoured his brother, Foreign Affairs Minister Peter Arthur Mutharika, as his successor, naming him as acting president when he travelled but it's suggested that he did not have time to consolidate the succession before his heart attack, an event that took many by surprise. Banda, 62, presided over a Cabinet meeting before the inauguration and held a news on conference at which she was flanked by Cabinet ministers, the army commander and the national police chief. She takes over a country in which shortages of sugar, fuel and other commodities have created long, restive queues at shops and petrol stations. Under the constitution, Banda will serve out Mutharika's term, which ends in early 2014. Mutharika, 78, first won office in 2004, and was re-elected in 2009 but his presidency has been marked by a deterioration ibn relations with Western donor states, on who the country largely depends. She has no relation to Hastings Kamuzu Banda, who led Malawi - formerly known as Nyasaland - to independence from Britain, only to impose an oppressive rule from 1963 to 1994.
