Leo and Culture Shock continue their journey through Vietnam, and this time we will show you Saigon, also known as Ho Chi Minh City, the largest and most developed city in Vietnam. Saigon made a huge first impression on me. I didn't expect to find such a rapidly developing and modern metropolis in a communist country. But we won't be showing its touristy side, rather the parts of the city that tourists don't get to see. We will walk through the back streets and alleys of Ho Chi Minh City and visit ordinary Vietnamese people to find out how they live and what they do. There are many poor areas in Saigon where entire families of seven people live within just 50 square feet of space. In these simple dwellings, they manage not only to live as large families, but also to do business and produce things. Saigon also has a neighborhood where people live on boats instead of houses. Moreover, we will visit street markets and try various traditional Vietnamese foods. During this trip, we will discuss the culture and traditions of the country, learn many unusual things about everyday life, and how a communist country manages to preserve traditions and even religion.
