The appendix is a 2 to 4-inch tube that extends off of the large intestine, close to where it meets the small intestine. The appendix is composed of lymphatic tissue, so it produces antibodies and white blood cells that help your body fight infection. The main function of the appendix is to act as a reservoir for good bacteria for the purpose of repopulating the colon after damage from things like diarrhea or antibiotics. Sometimes the appendix can become infected—this is known as appendicitis. Poor diet and excessive sugar consumption can cause appendicitis. If you’ve had your appendix removed, you may have developed scar tissue in your right lower abdomen. This can sometimes affect the nerves of the right leg, causing right knee pain.
