Arealva

This film captures the location in a time of change before it is gone away for good. Arealva, an abandoned wine factory, previously home to thousands of workers closed due to the construction of the 25 de Abril bridge. This film documents the dying landscape through close-up abstract imagery with a backing eerie soundscape. The slow pacing of the film observes the process of nature reclaiming this unique landscape. Arealva was the second film made during Cal’s Artist-in-Residency in Lisbon and acted as research into the subject of his primary film Still Life.  Both films were made on location at Cais do Ginjal and capture the tragic story of a fallen town due to industrialisation. The 25 de Abril bridge being the main reason for the fishing village’s abandonment casts its shadow and a deafening sound throughout both films and the town itself.
